The newly released Dept of Investigations report confirmed what we have heard from protesters, advocacy groups, & leaders across the city: Mayor de Blasio & the NYPD leadership were ill-prepared & mishandled the department’s role in ensuring peaceful protest this past summer(1/6)
This is unacceptable. While we must hold individual officers accountable for their actions, this is a failure of leadership. The DOI report makes clear that there was no strategy at the highest level and a lack of direction and accountability from city hall. (2/6)
The absence of specific protest protocols and de-escalation tactics increased instances of excessive force and decreased public safety. It is incumbent on the department to respond immediately to ensure what happened this summer never happens again. (3/6)
The NYPD must work with community leaders and residents, create comprehensive protest guidelines and retrain and credential qualified officers to respond to protests. (4/6)
This report shines a light on the need to rethink policing in our city. When I’m mayor, I’ll make certain that my police commissioner understands my values and the perspective of people who look like me and grew up like I did. (5/6)
