Pundits constantly compare Bruce with Rafa. All done to try and convince us what a great job Bruce is doing. Of course those of us who watch #nufc every week know this is utter nonsense and belies what we are watching. So I thought I’d dig deeper into the stats. A thread.
I’ve gone through both manager’s Premier League records at #nufc to see how they compare. I’ve only used PL matches as it would be unfair to include the Championship season. Rafa managed us for 86 PL matches. Leeds was Bruce’s 50th NUFC PL match.
I’ll start off with a few stats that are similar for both.
First the percentages of matches won, drawn & lost by both:
Rafa: W 31.4% D 24.42% L
Bruce: W 32% D 26% L 42%
Average #nufc possession per match:
Rafa: 41%
Bruce: 39%

Average #nufc possession per match:

Both managers have also overseen a similar number of shut outs/clean sheets & the number of matches #NUFC failed to score in is also almost identical.
% of matches with no goals conceded:
Rafa: 26.74%
Bruce: 26%
% of matches with no NUFC goals scored:
Rafa: 33.72%
Bruce: 32%
% of matches with no goals conceded:

Bruce: 26%
% of matches with no NUFC goals scored:
Rafa: 33.72%
Bruce: 32%
The difference comes when you look at the manner of defeats. The percentage of matches we have lost by 2 or more goals is very telling.
Under Rafa this figure was 12.79%
Under Bruce it’s 30%
So under Bruce #nufc have lost almost a third of league matches by 2 or more goals.

So under Bruce #nufc have lost almost a third of league matches by 2 or more goals.
The percentage of matches in which #nufc have conceded 3 or more goals is even more damning for Bruce.
Rafa: 12.79%
Bruce: 24%
The well drilled defence under Rafa is now a thing of the past with Bruce’s NUFC conceding 3 or more goals in just under a quarter of PL matches.

That isn’t really surprising when comparing how many shots the respective #nufc teams have faced and the increase observed under Bruce.
Average opposition shots per match:
Rafa: 12.5
Bruce: 15.2
Average opposition shots on target per match:
Rafa: 3.9
Bruce: 5.5

I’ll let others draw their own conclusions. #nufc
