Just me thinking ‘aloud’ about assistive technology... (thread
) 1/6

My worry with some of the ‘assistive technology’ I see celebrated a lot is that it will push backwards against any progress in inclusivity. Will requests for inclusive approaches be shrugged off, with the onus placed on disabled people to source and sort it out themselves? 2/6
A lot of ‘assistive technology’ seems to involve the disabled person wearing/using/owning devices themselves...it has no wider circle/usage/impact. Others don’t even need to think about disability + inclusion... 3/6
...So will people just stop thinking about inclusion altogether? Will it just be ‘there’s probably tech for that, if you need it then get it’?? Will people stop asking what their companies can do for inclusion? Will it be easy to hide behind assistive tech?? 4/6
Not to mention the financial angle - for all the talk of ‘assistive technology becoming the norm’ it won’t come cheap...and I feel like a lot of people just won’t want to use it anyway?? It echoes (and shouts tbh) the dominant ‘normality’ models in place atm 5/6
Really would welcome others’ thoughts on the assistive tech conversation as I find it all a bit of a maze, and am curious to hear from disabled people on it. Every time I hear about this topic, it’s coming from non-disabled sources, and I feel like it’s very one-sided. 6/6
