a thread on Kanokari, and the parallel between Chapter 13's "morning glory" story and the progression of Kazuya and Chizuru's relationship [manga spoilers, of course]:
The "morning glory" story, told by Kazuya's friend Kibe to Chizuru in chapter 13/episode 4, not only helps characterize Kazuya, but serves as a symbolic foreshadowing to the events of the story. I rarely see this scene discussed, but it's easily my favorite early-manga chapter.
The story: Kazuya and his class planted morning glories back in primary school, and even after getting his pot knocked over, he continued to water the messed up soil. It sprouted first, as it wasn't a morning glory like the rest, but he still insisted on growing it regardless.
This resulted in Kazuya growing a completely different plant, but it stood out among the rest as a beautiful hibiscus flower. Kibe later explains that had he stopped watering that plant, it wouldn't have blossomed into the award-winning flower it turned out to be in the end.
The essence of Kazuya's character comes out here because despite him making lots of irrational decisions in the manga, it serves a greater, long-term purpose in the end that he fully believes he can reach, as his blinding idealism is what drives his future actions for Chizuru.
Kanokari follows the same progression as the morning glory story, as Kazuya cultivates the flower (Chizuru) throughout the manga. There are obstacles, whether it's the rental barrier, interpersonal relationships, and the web of lies he and Chizuru establish to protect each other.
Chizuru slowly but surely blossoms with his help, which comes to fruition in the manga's movie arc, as Kazuya was the driving force behind getting her to actualize her dream of becoming an actress. Much like a plant needs sunlight and water to grow, Kazuya's idealism and almost-
inhuman optimism helped Chizuru grow out of her pessimistic shell, as he goes through hell for the sake of making her dream come true even if she's a rental GF and may see him as only a customer. It's irrational, but it's true to his character to see things through to the end.
There are many reasons why he shouldn't be helping Chizuru out: rental GF, Ruka the "real" GF, Mami the ex-GF, and lying to each others' families. Yet still, the endgame is still the same, which is helping Chizuru reach her full potential because of his undying belief in her
"It's not a morning glory" manifests itself in the present day as "She's just a rental girlfriend", but the result is still the same: Kazuya saw something special in both the flower and Chizuru, and despite all the obstacles, he still helps them blossom into something beautiful.
To close this long ass thread off, I'm glad you made it all the way through to the end here because this is longer than I thought it would be 😭 Kanokari is a flawed, yet special story for me, and I wanted to share an part of it that I found really nice.
