🧵: It seems it’s “mediocre men question women‘s qualifications & show their arrogant elitism” season. They don’t deserve the clicks so I’m not sharing. But seeing as how they both took issue with community colleges & students, here’s some data & narratives to keep in mind: 1/
There are over 1000 community colleges (CCs) in the country. Collectively they educate 41% of the US undergraduate population. 36% of these students enroll full time while 64% enroll part-time (more on that later). 34% of them are Pell-recipients & 59% receive some form of aid 2/
Additionally, CCs enroll 5 million non-credit students (adult Ed, workforce programs, etc.). Many community college students are working students, with 31% of those working full time and 37% working part time. Now, who are these students, exactly? 3/
57% are women, 29% are first generation college students, 26% are parents, and 5% are veterans. 45% identify as white, 13% Black, 26% are Hispanic-Latinx, 6% are Asian/Pacific Islander, & 1% are Native American or Alaska Native.
So when these men talk about Dr. Biden’s dissertation (Student Retention At The Community College: Meeting Students’ Needs) being laughable & a joke, or call community college students “slow,” this is who they are talking about & we should all be outraged by their callousness 4/
Community colleges are economic engines in their communities, they provide much needed skills training so local industries can have the workforce they need. They provide the most affordable & accessible avenue to postsecondary education. They are a middle class launchpad 5/
Odds are you know someome who has positively benefited from community colleges. The institutions, their students, and those who teach them deserve our utmost respect & admiration. (Data courtesy of @CCTrustees & @Comm_College). End 🧵
