I know it sounds obvious but it’s easy to forget obvious things in a high stress state . I was once told of the general visiting his soldiers. He has so little time but great concern and he asks each of them...
‘Food all right? Feet alright? Mail getting through?’ So ask: food: am I able to eat ( dentures clean , thrush treated, do I need help, or some special treat, are my bowels ok? ), then ....
Feet: please get me out of bed, dressed in clothes or even pjs but please not a gown , right aids in reach, a little more movement each day, even chair or bed exercises to give me strength and hope , then...
Mail getting through: am I delirious or depressed ? Can I hear? Do you think I’ll ever get home- if you think I’ve got a chance, say so because it looks bad from where I’m lying. Kind words. Call me by my name. Which may not be the one above my head....
This is all a good start and it makes more difference than you might ever think.
