I think the reason why a lot of stories with the whole "society = bad" theme fail to say anything meaningful is because they usually frame it as an issue of "society is bad because people are bad" rather than "society is bad because bad people exploit bad systems"
Yes I am thinking about persona 5. That game teeters back and forth constantly between saying something meaningful and merely using "society is corrupt" as a cool aesthetic
The public is too apathetic to call out corruption = cool. Police are bad = cool. Akechi's whole backstory = cool. Corruption is because of a small but widespread group of people doing bad things and once you get rid of them things are good again = well,
People are always like "how can u be anti-capitalist/pro-cop and still like persona 5" and it's because the game doesn't actually critique any type of social or economic institution, it just critiques the people that abuse them. Nothing in it challenges these ideologies
