I had the privilege over the last 4 weeks of working with @AliAbdaal and his team
With the help of 5 amazing peer supporters, we created a support system for students of his Part-Time YouTuber Academy course
Here is what I learned

Here is what I learned
1/ None of this is possible without amazing humans
Ali is a gifted teacher
He also had 4 amazing humans helping him
@lizfilips
@zoocster
@apmparker
@CharlotCrowther
You don't create transformations for ~400 students without the incredible efforts of a passionate team

2/ It takes a village
Then he added the peer supporters
@JustBhavs
@m_ashcroft
@ArcherNewton_
@yathprem
@joegannon22
Every one different
Every one a rockstar
Every one going out there way to help YouTubers wherever they are on their journey

3/ Community
Enough cannot be said about how beautifully this community grew
Forged through the relentless pace of the course
Fueled by encouragement and feedback from fellow students
Each and every student brought something to a month of growth

4/ No student left behind
This is where I played a small role
Ali and his team were fearless in ensuring every single one of the students in this program experienced a transformation
I'm serious, they stopped at nothing to ensure this
Let's dive into this one, shall we?

It all started when Ali gifted me enrollment in the course in exchange for helping him make it the best it could be https://twitter.com/AliAbdaal/status/1320462127879065600?s=20
We got on a call and I explained the role of mentors
He asked so many questions
He was taking notes
Then he asked me at the end
"Would you want to run this for me?"

It was Ali's idea to change the name from mentor to peer supporter
And I think there is an important difference
I've talked about how mentors are the journey leaders, only 1 step ahead https://twitter.com/david_perell/status/1336690293647749123?s=20

Peer Supporters are half a step ahead
Thanks to Ali, I think there is space for both in online courses
What these 5 amazing peer supporters were able to do was provide a space for students struggling with the complexity of the destination and help them see the next step

They each hosted a weekly session to bring students together to discuss challenges
They witnessed how other students were eager to step in and help each other
They were able to identify stars who could be harnessed to help others
And stragglers who needed extra support

One of the cool experiments I'm grateful to Ali for letting me try was the Mid Course Email
The idea was to email EVERY student personally to check in on their progress
Let me remind you there were ~400 students in this course!

We broke it down like this:
- @CharlotCrowther pulled together data on every student from pre-course surveys as well as assignments completed and Zoom minutes attended
- @JustBhavs came up with a RAG approach to group students
- I created a template email to personalize

The responses we saw from these emails were phenomenal!
But no surprise, when you think about it
We all want to be seen
We all want to know that our teachers and mentors care about us
Thanks to this amazing team, we were able to do it at scale

I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to work with @AliAbdaal and everyone else mentioned in this thread
And I look forward to working with them on Cohort 2
Big things coming
