This #InternationalMigrantsDay (and as we wrap up a tough year) we'd like to reflect on some of the issues affecting migrant communities that have emerged in our classes & what action students and staff have taken on them. (thread)
We've worked hard to ensure our classes keep running throughout lockdown. #ESOL classes are also communities in & of themselves, & we wanted to make sure we could stay connected. Here, EFA student, Nadifa, talks about this: https://twitter.com/EFALondon/status/1327249091869372416
We didn't stop campaigning for improved #ESOL provision, incl on issues of access, where many migrants are excluded. Here's a thread on our #LoveESOL meeting with City Hall, where Deputy Mayor @JulesPipe was in attendance. ESOL is a migrants' rights issue: https://twitter.com/EFALondon/status/1309523449912664064
EFA students tuned into @migrantsorg 's vigil to remember lives lost because of cruel #HostileEnvironment policies. We also signed the @FIRMCharter, have you? https://twitter.com/EFALondon/status/1316778508404822016
EFA students also attended @CreatingGround's recent launch of a short film that looked at the impact of #HostileEnvironment policies. We had a lot of discussions on this following that. https://twitter.com/EFALondon/status/1319031742909612046
We organised different workshops, including with @IWGBunion and @WeAreSettled to look at migrants' rights at work and in relation to #Brexit, issues that are popular in our #ESOL classes.
EFA students started a new project called People in Action to identify common issues affecting #ESOL students and to better understand how we can work on them: https://twitter.com/EFALondon/status/1333781967121256454
In our regular housing action group meetings with @HousingActionSL, #ESOL students have been sharing their experiences of overcrowding. This is a serious hazard during a public health crisis. Join HASL's action on this issue with @publiclawcentre : https://twitter.com/publiclawcentre/status/1336319105402511363
In our @thevoiceofdws #ESOL class, students who are migrant domestic workers have been talking about policies affecting their rights and how they're campaigning on this front - sign and share this crucial petition they've started: https://twitter.com/thevoiceofdws/status/1302599029759635458
We've continued working on our transnational research project, Migreat! where we're looking at alternative narratives on #migration in the UK, France, Italy and Hungary. We've interviewed amazing groups along the way: https://efalondon.org/migreat-a-new-efa-transnational-project/
So much more to add of course. It's been a very tough year that could've been made a bit easier for many with policies that support migrant communities & no #HostileEnvironment. Here's to a better year and solidarity today & always with migrants across the UK and the world ✊
