Cranial Nerves

1/
Cranial nerve testing should be within the skill set of ALL clinicians

Just as UL, LL & UMN neurological testing are.

There is a strong suggestion that history and education have not prepared PT’s well for this.

Many #Physio's report that:

1. They were not taught CN’s at University

2. If they were, they are a little rusty with application and interpretation

3. It’s not something they do very often, and so hard to recall
3/
Meanwhile, the Physiotherapy profession are currently championing the concepts of FCP and ACP roles within healthcare.

There is a mismatch here, + a need to improve education & competencies.

If we say we can work at that level, then we have to be able to walk the walk.
4/ But

It's not just FCP’s & ACP’s who need these skills.

They are easily attainable for any clinician, and can readily be understood and applied from UG level.

The missing links are often context, understanding, working knowledge and the application of clinical reasoning.
5/ FREE CPD

This short ‘Fireside CPD’ FILM is designed to:

1. Introduce the cranial nerves
2. Consider their functions
3. Consider mechanisms of dysfunction
4. Consider what potential pathologies/mechanisms to look out for.

Happy Friday :)

... and, it's OK to use a crib sheet if you don't do this often.

Though like anything practice makes perfect.
