So, here's a problem I have about the stimulus checks. And it's not about the amount.
Firstly, the amount - $600 - is pure shit. It's an insult to people who've been struggling all year. $1200 was an insult, as well, $600 is a slap in the face.
This isn't about that.
My problem is in calling it a "stimulus" check. It reveals so much about our politician's minds that they may not be aware of.
Firstly that they don't see this as money people need to survive. These aren't emergency checks, they aren't subsistence checks... they're "stimulus" checks.
They're not meant for you. Sure you get the money, and you're expected to spend it. But it's not for you.
It's for the economy. You're expected to spend it to "stimulate" the economy.
Because, you see, people have been huddled behind closed doors, staying safe... and not spending as much money.
(exceptions exist, I am aware)
But the problem is that businesses - typically big businesses, have experienced lower than usual sales for this time of year. And because they have vastly greater money than you do, they're concerns are vastly more amplified to our politicians.
So the businesses are the ones our politicians care about. Not you. These stimulus checks? That's the amount they feel the businesses need, divided by the number of people.
Not how much you need to get by. Not how much they feel you deserve. Because it has nothing to do with you. It's about the economy.
And frankly, that should sicken us. Because the United States is meant to be a government Of, By, and especially FOR the PEOPLE.
Not for some nebulous system of largely imaginary money shuffling around. I.e., the economy.
