debunking myths about screenreaders: the series: the sequel from someone who actually uses one
a thread

i'm legally blind & losing my vision, without my glasses i cannot see a foot in front of me. headaches from adhd also make it hard to focus on lettering so i use a screenreader when i need it
if you are not visually impaired, you don't decide what is and isn't ableist to visually impaired people! you don't get to call the most random thing ableist for your hit tweet of the month
fonts are ableist, but if you're not visually impaired or affected by it... why threaten people that you'll unfollow them? when blind people have taken the time to explain why they're ableist? why won't you share resources instead so the internet becomes more accessible...
unfollowing an account that happens to be ableist does nothing to help us at all... education is not hard when we've laid out the sources for you
if you are not visually impaired, you get to send resources made By Us to educate people. it's your job to spread it because we were nice enough to educate you.
we want the internet more accessible. not your "unfollowing people with fonts" because you think it does something

if someone has fonts tell them to remove or provide a translation because blind people cannot use their screenreaders to read the font, and providing a translation will keep your aesthetic but still be accessible.
myth debunking time
myth 1: typing quirks and double spacing are both ableist and bad because screenreaders can't read them
WRONG
WRONG
literally 90% of typing quirks are read out fine on their own. they are not inherently ableist.
the only one that messes with screenreaders is L1k3 th15; and if you have a typing quirk like that just provide a translation. no one is saying you can't use one;

it's just if you use Th15 0n3 we need a translation for it to be accessible.
stop bullying neurodivergent kids in the name of blind people. educate someone if you aren't the affected group; and if you Are the affected group it's okay to be angry

the reason the number ones mess with screen readers is because of excessive numbers. i can still understand h3 and th3y and if you don't have a screenreader be quiet? because i live with this. not you. if I understand it, no matter how weird it sounds to you, that's what matters
proof time! i've talked about this before and i'll do it again
myth 2: symbols are bad and ableist because screenreaders can't read them
WRONG
WRONG
screenreaders can't read unicode symbols, so this is partly true. but it's not ableist if we can't read your symbols.... because we can't see them in the first place

i don't care what stars you have in your dn god bless how do i associate you with something i can only picture instead of... your name...
myth 3: typos are ableist
NO!!!
NO!!!
typos suck to read... but literally everyone makes them...
screenreaders will attempt to read a word with a typo, i can 9 times of out 10 understand the original word. if someone messes up a typo that no one can read ofc they'll correct it
it's not even close to ableism

myth 4: pronouns only work if they're in your bio
WRONG
WRONG
for the love of god SHUT THE FUCK UP ABOUT THIS. they work in locations. they work in links. someone made it up, just like twitter suspending people for fake locations, because they want trans people to be more vulnerable. to scare cis people into taking them out.
they work in both locations and links. stop spreading this because 1. you are speaking over those you claim to help, and 2. it was a lie to endanger trans people in the first place
stop speaking on things that you "just heard" from someone who isn't even visually impaired. here's something i didn't "just hear" this is my screenreader reading the locations and links that you claim it can't
we still have a long way to go until the internet's accessible for everyone. my alt text still doesn't work, things can be interrupted by notifications, etc.
but the internet becomes accessible with YOU. we can't fight to change everyone's ideas when it's a personal choice to be accepting or not. cheesy or not, change comes from you and we need you to listen. not when people speak FOR us, but when we can finally speak for ourselves.
and for the love of god seeing as i've had to make this thread twice because people open their mouths saying blatant lies that we constantly have to repeat isn't true... listen to us when we are the ones living with screenreaders. not you.
"ur screenreader reads them so fast... the numbers seem hard to understand..." in case you missed it i'm not an infant and can understand people speaking quickly and people making mistakes in wording it's not hard
also this is hell don't do this either
