Long post about repair ahead!
So I have this broken cintiq 20wsx. no picture, no backlight. not even a stinkin menu
and so i cracked it open. i was hoping to see something obvious on the board, something blown up or burnt out
then i saw them!
see how these capacitors are slightly bulging?
SIDEBAR: electronics from the late 90s to late 2000s were subject to something called "CAPACITOR PLAGUE" functioning fine for a few years, then suddenly swelling and blowing up.
it was a truly insane story involving a corporate spy stealing a formula from a company but copying it wrong, leading to millions of bad caps in consumer electronics from that era. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capacitor_plague
so i desoldered them.
and got some new ones on amazon. it's hard to buy just a few capacitors on amazon, so i had to get 640 for 15$?!?! i don't know why these are called "BOJACK" lol
replaced the old ones
and sure enough.... a stinkin menu!!
it totally works now. and just b/c of a few tiny components worth pennies
bye bye shitty caps
truly fucked up how much ewaste this dumb mistake caused for a decade. Thanks for coming to my TED talk.
I put all of this in my instagram stories but thought it was important to put it up where the text could be indexable and searchable. I definitely did a lot of googling about "cintiq 20wsx blue light no picture"
and the real joke of it is, i did fix it but now it's only useful really as a second display b/c wacom stopped supporting this model!
