[Raja thread] It has been a fairly long time since I did a thread on Raja. This thread is about Raja songs of the last decade.
I have been listening to some of the Raja songs on Tidal app in high quality. It has been a joy. Also got some decent earphones. Want to share that joy with all of you.
Let us start with 'Dhoni'. What an outstanding album it turned out to be. 'chinna kannile' from the film.
What a charming song this is. Shreya's honey dripping voice is soothing to the soul. The orchestration is very free flowing.
Na. Muthukumar's lyrics are lovely as well. And that second interlude. The slight slow down and then the acceleration đź‘Ś
One more song from 'Dhoni'. 'vilayata padagoti' Once again the voice of Shreya
I can take a bet that as time passes by this album will keep climbing up in everyone's estimation
Let's take another movie which should high up in everyone's estimate. 'Megha'. 'mugilo megamo' from that movie.
I have given you Raja's version. The other version is a duet involving Yuvan Shankar Raja. The orchestration for this song is amazing.
From the same movie, 'Megha', the superbly jazzy, 'kalvane'
Another amazing album in last decade was 'Snehaveedu'. Shreya Ghosal with 'avani thumbi'
Raja has been partial to Malayalam when it comes to melodies. This movie is no different. All the songs were amazing melodies
From the same movie, 'chengadhir kaiyum veesi'.
Brilliant brilliant misra chapu based song. The way Raja shifts the starting points is a lesson in how to tune a complex melody without losing the melodic part of it.
Chitra as usual is in fine fettle and handles the rhythmic complexity with ease. One of Raja's extremely challenging composition
Let us move to Kannada now. From the movie, 'Oggarane', 'galiya mathali'
From the same movie, an ode to food. 'ee janumave'
Now to Telugu. 'kanulu kalanu piliche ' from 'Abbayitho Ammayi'
It is unfortunate that this movie was not a hit. All the songs in this movie were gems.
Youtube comment on this song, "1 keyboard, 1 key flute, 1 violin.. That's all!!! This is pure magic.. How can a 73 year old guy be this romantic unless he is supernatural?"
From the same movie, 'tholi paruvam'
From 'Sengaththu Bhoomiyile', a wonderful 90s style melody, 'kathiruppen'
'foolishq' from 'Ki & Ka'
Raja gave only one song to this film while someone else scored the others. This was definitely the best of the lot.
The haunting 'ammanukku senja thali' from 'Kalathur Gramam'
The lovely lovely 'kekkadha vadhiyam' from 'Merku Thodarchi Malai'
From the same film, the heart wrenching, 'andharathil thongudhamma'
The 'en mannu ena paaka' line is extremely touching. No one other than Raja could have composed like this. This is a result of his lived experience
The stunning 'manasil nirajavale' from 'Muthuramalingam'
With this I will stop for today. We will continue part 2 some other day. Thank you.
