As we mentioned two weeks ago, Nap had dropped his role as manager the previous season and came to spring training as a young 35 year old.
Nap continued at a blistering pace but by the end of July, Ty Cobb had caught up to Nap--the two headed into the end of the season neck and neck for the title.
On Oct 5th the two posed for a famous photo in a Chalmers Automobile: "Before the game Lajoie and Cobb sat in the prize auto side by side, and were photographed. They seemed to worry less about the prize than did the spectators."
Also, throughout the season, fans could follow who was on top with the Auto Chasers clip in the paper
With Cleveland and Detroit out of the pennant race, fans gravitated to the auto chase and it caught a lot of news coverage.
Ultimately Cobb had a decent advantage and took off the last few games to play as part of an All-Star team to prep the Athletics for the WS. Nap needed a miracle and needed to record a hit in every at bat....
You'll have to listen to the podcast for what ultimately happened, but in the end, Cobb was awarded the title but both players received cars
Years later it was discovered this wasn't the case and that Cobb had been awarded two extra hits. https://sportsworld.nbcsports.com/set-the-record-straight/
