This is the most personal I have ever been on social media…
How @RealRLimbaugh saved my life when I was in my teens
LONG THREAD
I have never met the all-knowing El Rushbo
But I’ve listened to his show since I was 13 or 14

Listening to Rush every day is where I learned what “conservatism” was all about
12pm was the highlight of my day (yes, you could say I was a nerd)
I was homeschooled so that gave me the ability to listen to a political talk show in the middle of the day

Listening to Rush made me a huge fan of President Reagan... eventually Reagan became my idol. I read every single book imaginable about Reagan
Every. Single. Book.
Every. Single. Book.
I first read Reagan’s autobiography when I was 14 and I even had my own Ronald Reagan tribute website / blog that received a lot of viewers back in the day
People like policy scholar and author, @stevenfhayward, mailed me a copy of his book about Reagan in hopes I would write a favorable book review for my Reagan website
They likely won’t remember it, but even @DineshDSouza and @DavidLimbaugh (Rush’s brother) both agreed to write short blurbs of support for my website (I’m pretty sure they both had AOL email addresses)
They had no idea they were emailing with a 15-year-old kid in Georgia

@townhallcom published my article about Reagan… it was one of my teenage life highlights. Thanks @katiepavlich (it was long before your time!)
Oh the power of the internet in 1999!
Oh the power of the internet in 1999!
I grew up in a home with very bizarre religious beliefs… some would say we were extremely conservative, but I would describe it more cult-like than anything. Let’s put it this way, southern Baptists always ended up being too liberal for my parents
All of that is for another day but to give you a general idea… one of the few things we were allowed to watch on TV was EDITED episodes of the black & white Andy Griffith Show
Yep, my dad would meticulously edit out all the “bad” parts using 2 side-by-side VHS players.

Do not begin to ask me what had to be censored
And then it happened...
One day when I was 15, my parents informed me that I was now PROHIBITED from listening to Rush Limbaugh – ever

They believed listening to El Rushbo was making me “arrogant” … little did they know, that was built-in for young Seth… a feature, not an error!
So there I was, my whole life was politics, listening to Rush every day, and writing on my Reagan tribute website and suddenly, it was all gone
For a homeschooled kid growing up in a household that did not allow much outside contact, this was devastating

So what did that arrogant little 15-year-old do?
I recorded Rush on my radio alarm clock with a cassette recorder!
Every night after midnight, I would rewind the cassette tapes and listen using a half-broken headset… One ear worked, one didn’t, which was perfect

I could listen to Rush in one ear, and hear my parents coming down the hall with the other and have plenty of time to hide the evidence of listening to the all-knowing Maha Rush!
Around this time, my parents also cut off all contact with my grandparents who lived next door.

They were (and still are) a major part of my life
I’ll never forget looking out the back window and watching my granddad walk from his house to his garden, every day, and not be allowed to join him anymore

In 2044, when AOC becomes President and turns the USA into a socialist hellhole, thanks to my granddad, all of you will be hanging out at my house because I know how to grow food
(I joke, we all know Barron will be President in 2044)
In summary, this was my life at 15:

I wasn’t allowed to see my grandparents who lived next door
I wasn’t allowed to go to Sunday School (because evidently, Hitler invented Sunday School or some bizarre BS along those lines invented by my dad)

I was not allowed much, if any, contact with other kids my age – or any age
I was no longer allowed to write political articles for my Reagan website
To sum it up, I was depressed.
Very depressed.

I felt like there was no way I would ever make it to the age of 18 and finally legally leave… it seemed too far away and even then, escaping the situation seemed impossible
My depression got to the stage where I would think about committing suicide…

It was the only way I could imagine getting out of the situation I was in
In my mind, it was hopeless
I'll never know if I could have ever really gone through with it, but I’m glad I didn’t have to find out
So what the HELL does any of this have to do with Rush Limbaugh?

Rush was not only rooting for America every single day on his show, but he was also rooting for me, 15-year-old Seth Weathers who felt his life was hopeless.
Rush didn’t know who I was, but he spoke to me every day through his program
Rush didn’t know who I was, but he spoke to me every day through his program
Every day, Rush reminded me that if you are fortunate enough to live in the United States of America, nothing was impossible
The American Dream is possible – for everyone
The American Dream is possible – for everyone
Didn’t matter where you came from, who your parents were, or how much money you had… you could live out your wildest dreams if you worked hard and embraced the American Dream
Rush is one of the significant factors that kept me from making a horrible decision in my teens that would have cut my life short
Since I was 15 years old, my dream was to follow in Rush’s footsteps and become a full-time political Talk Show Host

I’ve done my share of political commentary, but up until recently, I have not focused on fully pursuing that dream
In recent months, the news of Rush’s cancer diagnoses hit me hard
I was standing in my kitchen when he announced the news… it hit hard.

Even Maha Rushie was not immune to the difficulties and surprises life brings us
I felt inspired looking back on life and thinking about the impact Rush Limbaugh, a man I have never met, had on my life

Had it not been for Rush, I don’t know if I would be here today to experience the incredible love I share with my 2 young children

I’m filling in for my friend, @treyradel, who had faith in me to give me this chance. Thank you, Trey.
On a sad note, Trey will likely lose his job once corporate discovers he is the reason they let me on air. Don’t worry Trey, I’ll start a GoFundMe for you!

Thank you, Rush Limbaugh, for all you have done for the greatest country on earth and for your daily reminder of the power of The American Dream
I love you, and America loves you.
