Only after living in Italy for many years have I really understood the meaning of "mafia" and how it influences daily lives and how many people get involved without even realizing they did.

*glances at Writing Community*
Uhhh, guys? We.... Have some issues. 😂
"Mafia" isn't an institution. It's a way of life.
You can become part of it without ever being recruited. "Mafia" spontaneously comes into being whenever someone is making money in a way that tramples the rights of others, but you get something out of it so you look away.
Something as simple as authors selling copies by bringing attention to the people who leave negative reviews? And all the "community" coming together in "support"?
That's a classic mafia stomp. It's a "we" against one, where the one has little chance of winning.
Looking the other way when your super supportive "friend" is abusive of one person? Because that friend promotes your work and the other person is someone you barely know?
Boom, mafia seed. Stick around, it'll grow.
There's only ever the thinnest of lines between taking the advantages given to you, and ending up on the "cose nostre" side.
Cose nostre just means "our business". Secrets. Doing what benefits us, no matter what. It's not a big, mysterious entity.
It's daily choices.
