To everyone disappointed about the BBC comedy job today. Yes, it’s a wonderful opportunity & opens a lot of doors. But it’s not the only opportunity. I was never well enough to go for that job & managed to find other opportunities that were more my pace. You will too. I promise.
It sucks right now. I’ve been there. But not getting this job might mean the time & energy to write a killer script - or book. Let yourself feel the disappointment today, then get back up tomorrow & keep writing, because your voice is precious & the world needs it.
If I’d have got that job, I never would have sold my first script. I never would have written my book. And at the time, none of those things looked remotely possible. I was bereft. But it worked out for the best & showed me there are more pots of gold than I ever realised.
And hey, if this year doesn’t deliver the goods, there’s always next year. I know multiple people who applied several times before getting the job. Some who didn’t make the first round of interviews one year and got the job the next. A year can make all the difference.
My advice to applicants who didn’t get it this year is follow up & put yourself forward for more BBC rooms / additional material slots. Be bold and ask. Make this an opportunity in and of itself.
