As we all know, Cardiff’s road overall transport and road network is outdated. Designed for a city half the size, with car travel prioritised over public transport and active travel. That is why last year we set out a 10 year transport vision https://keepingcardiffmoving.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/White-Paper-for-Cardiff-Transport-2019-ENGLISH.pdf
This scheme is to do with the serious air quality issues we have in Cardiff - with a focus on re-allocating more road space to buses, bikes and pedestrians. https://gov.wales/ps21m-air-quality-improvements-cardiff-after-minister-approves-final-plan
The scheme includes a major change to the junction around the side of the castle. Bringing pedestrian movements to the surface. Decreasing the number of cars – creating much better links between the civic centre, castle st and city centre.
The underpass will be removed to create a far more accessible crossing for all users. This also creates a much bigger public space around the Friary Gardens and canal. There will be space for small businesses and young people will be involved in the design
Boulevard de Nantes doesn't currently live up to it’s grand title does it? It will now change to add wider pavements, crossing points and permanent cycleways. The ugly central reservation and ‘cattle’ crossings will be removed and replaced with natural green drainage.
As with all our new schemes we take every opportunity to include sustainable urban drainage and enhance biodiversity. You can see the new green spaces and trees in the designs. Similar to the approach used at the multi award-winning Greener Grangetown. https://greenblue.com/gb/case-studies/greener-grangetown/
The junction with Newport Road and Dumfries Place will be redesigned. Currently pedestrians are often crammed onto narrow crossing and pavements. Urgent work when you consider Queen St Station will see users more than double as the Metro takes shape.
This area will be re-prioritised for better bus access. Large numbers of buses come this way from East of the city – they will now have better access to come and go quickly, and also to get to the new bus interchange (many routes from the east never reached the old bus station).
This whole scheme area is a vital part of our new network of segregated cycleways – and provide a city centre ‘loop’. Fully connecting routes from the west/Castle St, the taff trail and Cathays. And also starting the new route along Newport Road.
Now the really exciting bit. The dock feeder canal runs for over 3 miles from the Taff at Blackwier past the castle and winds under the city centre before 'feeding' the docks to ensure levels are higher than in the channel. This walk-through is fascinating https://www.28dayslater.co.uk/threads/dock-feeder-canal-culvert-cardiff-july-2018.113830/
