Nightmare situation for Baum, as I think it would have been for any other coach. Club is hugely damaged, squad unsettled, short of quality and mentally broken. Schalke need to decide what they want to do long term and then appoint the right coach to make that happen.
Baum's firing is proof that none of the aforementioned planning occurred when it should have done. They just appointed someone who had done a decent job in the league before, hoping that was enough. What kind of strategy is that?
Also, got to feel for Bielefeld, who are Schalke's opponents on the weekend. Stevens coming in short-term (to top up his retirement fund) brings new energy. It really feels like it is set up for Schalke to end their winless run. Tough break for the newly-promoted side.
Oh and one more thing re Schalke. Tired of board members and sporting directors constantly making coaches pay for what is happening. Responsibility for a struggling club should be shared. Saving your own job shouldn't be a priority. Wholesale changes needed.
