What I don't think many people understand is that for trans people taking hormones isn't just about the physical changes they produce. People always want to talk about our bodies, and yes, it's lovely to be able to grow a terrible beard these days, but that's not the core point.
As trans people, before we begin taking hormones, it's like our brains are on the wrong stuff. We're diesel engines running on petrol. We're PC's with Mac software. It's indefinably wrong and people are like "It's perfectly good fuel! It's bug free software! What's the problem?"
The problem is... It's just not what we need.
I remember being terrified to start testosterone because all the info was based on cis men and was like "you'll have anger issues you'll get violent" and as someone who'd struggled with that for years I was so worried - then I started it and I've never been more chill in my life.
It was like suddenly an ocean of awfulness was swept away and my brain was finally able to function as it had always meant to. It was an entire revelation.
