Once Rishi Durvasa worshipped Bhagwan Shiva & for his devotion he got lotus flower as prasad.He
was very happy & decided to visit Indralok to gift the flower to Indra Dev.On the way,Durvasa Rishi encountered Indra who was making a triumphant return atop his elephant Airavata.

He gave the lotus flower to IndraDev.Indra did not know what to do with flower so he placed it on one of the tusks of Airavata.
Lotus flower attracted bees,while trying to shoo away bees,Airavata did not notice that flowers had fallen down.He accidentally trampled on the flowers.

Rishi Durvasa considered this as an insult & cursed Indra that he will soon lose his wealth & position.Airavata was cursed to be born on earth as a wild elephant.Indra &Airavata asked for forgiveness for their act, Rishi told Indra that he will get back after losing it to a Raja.
Rishi told Airavata will get back his original form when he will be blessed by Bhagwan Shiva. Airavata roamed in earth,went to various places as a normal wild elephant.After many many years it reached a forest of Kadamba Trees.He walked around forest & soon found a Shiv linga.
The elephant stood mesmerized seeing the beautiful Shivlinga.
He saw a nearby pond & entered it.The wild elephant vanished & in his place stood a white Airavata in his former self,remembered everything.He performed abhisheka of the Shiva linga & placed lotus flowers from pond.

Airavata worshipped this Shiva Linga for releiving him from curse of Duruvasa.Shiva linga was worshipped by Indra in the Kadamba vanam earlier to get rid of Bhramahathi dosha.Story of Airavata getting relived from curse is depicted in mural paintings in Meenakshi Amman Temple.
Airavata wanted to stay there along with other 8 Astadik elephants & support the vimana.But Shiva appeared before him & asked him to continue his duties as Vahana of Indra Dev. Reluctantly,Airavata left the kadamba vanam so he obeyed the orders of Bhagwan Shiva
On the way back ,Airavata made one Shiva linga and worshipped - Shiva is known as Muktheeswarar and place was called Iravadha Nallur earlier. This Muktheeswarar temple is located south of Vaigai river at Vandiyur, situated near Teppakulam area of Madurai city.
