I already see some takes of "vapid fan service." Here are my thoughts. As incredible as that reveal was, that's not what made #TheMandalorian finale work. It was the moments between Grogu and Din that made it special. Everything else is just a cherry on top.(1)
Don't get me wrong, that other moment was amazing, but the show can offer you more, if you let it. @PedroPascal1's performance is stellar. The dynamic writing is fun and so damn enjoyable. If you want to limit this show to just "cool fan service" that's on you.(2)
If you look a little closer, you'll find a titular character that is discovering a purpose that is different than the one he was raised to accept. Din finds his identity not with the rules he follows but with the people who show him a different perspective.(3)
Grogu offers Din the ultimate self reflection. He discovers that he isn't just another "Mando" or just "part of the group," but, instead, his own individual. It's not just good storytelling but good Star Wars storytelling. #ThaMandalorian is more than the fun fan moments.(4)
