In this wild year, among many things, I went from giving 4-5 interviews a week to get a job, to taking 4-5 interviews a week to hire for my team. Along the way I learnt a thing or two. Thought I would share here. 👇🏼
Tip1: This is cliche, but the most important thing - if you are looking for a job, and you are getting rejected, do NOT let it get to you. Not fitting into the mold the hiring manager is looking for, is absolutely no reflection of your worth.
Above is especially true if you come from an unconventional background for your role (I did). It's a buyer's market for jobs right now, and when 5 ppl fit the bill conventionally, it's easy to get looked over. Work on getting a STRONG referral to the founder as your best bet.
Tip2: More cliches coming - but smiling and looking relaxed goes a really long way in making a good impression. What they say is true, the interviewer is making up their mind in the first few mins. Unless you do something exceptional towards the end to sway their opinion.
Tip3: When asked for a weakness, do share a weakness. I have been there - taking too long to ans. or deflecting this question with a strength disguised as a weakness. No. The manager wants to test your self awareness. Introspect and have this answer ready.
On weaknesses in an interview - you may feel vulnerable when sharing a weakness, but everyone has them. The rest of the interview is to show the interviewer that your strengths more than make up for your weakness.
Tip4: This is a given for those who have practiced product and consulting interviews. Have a notebook ready. Feel free to ask for time to think. Be structured wherever possible. Taking a few seconds to structure your answers goes a very long way.
Tip5: In your quest to convince your interviewer that you're awesome (I am sure you are!), it's easy to come across as arrogant. Be aware of this. Nobody wants to work with an a--hole. Humble team players >> arrogant "rockstars"
You can do all of this right and still not get the job. Hiring is a subjective, sometimes unfair game. Don't let it get you down. Sometimes, when you're rejected, you're dodging a bullet without realising it.
And there ends my lunch break rumination. Back to work 🏃🏽‍♀️
