THREAD: How would The Birlings have coped with Covid-19? @Team_English1 Mr Birling: anti masker, anti vax-er, it’s all a hoax etc. Avoids furloughing his workers by claiming they were on zero hours contracts. 1/8
Sybil Birling: refuses support to young women made homeless through losing their jobs at Birling’s factory. Claps the loudest on Thursday nights and has had the gardener create a beautiful rainbow out of flowers across the front lawn. Fancies Matt Hancock. 2/8
Sheila Birling: joins a local sewing group to make masks and through this sisterhood of community mindedness she discovers her social conscience. 3/8
Eric Birling: can’t cope with the restrictions on socialising and is found at an illegal rave in Brumley’s seediest nightclub. Endlessly retweets comments from anti-maskers with eye rolls emojis and Jennifer Lawrence’s spit laugh gif. Has to self isolate when Eva gets Covid. 4/8
Gerald Croft: bumps into Eric at the testing centre but they awkwardly avoid a conversation. Has to admit to five more affairs over the course of lockdown as various ‘young’ and ‘fresh’ girls get Covid and he has most certainly been a contact. 5/8
Eva Smith: campaigns for workers’ rights over unfair furlough conditions. Is interviewed on a picket line and the footage on the BBC news that night makes Gerald shifts awkwardly in his chair. Wears a mask at all times. 6/8
Edna: dies of Covid alone in an intensive care ward with no family around her. Becomes a statistic. 7/8
The Inspector: I think he *is* the virus. Sent to test us. 8/8
