My company was purchased by another management company earlier this year. The deal was delayed due to covid. It picked up a month ago and now will finalize next week. After a couple useless meetings we finally were ready to complete paperwork (onboarding <- stupid Corp talk)
At last minute due to covid new company HR folk couldn’t visit community. So we got paperwork & net as team w/management. We all got new job descriptions, & salary stuff. Mine included a 20% pay cut. Handed out in group setting, in 30 minute meeting. I’m not too good at maths
So I didn’t instantly know that it was 20% but I knew it was lower - it was a lot of numbers & calculations, bonus stuff etc. I took paperwork home to *really look at it & confirmed the significant decrease. I processed it all night trying to find words, & to be measured the
Next day, today. There was no sleep last night! At work I wrote to bosses, showing how I’ll lose 20%, then showing how w/current company I’m best in nation at what I do (no brag just truth), & compared to my area peers /same market my results are far & away best. During covid
Senior communities are devastated. Old company gave us essential worker hazard increase- that is being taken away, too. But ours has grown this year more than any other in company. Yay me. So I state that I should be receiving an increase not a significant decrease. And one
Final question I asked based on seeing how my coworkers had no noticeable facial changes when we all got our salaries/info. I asked: Am I the *only leadership member who is getting paycut? The implications were clear. I am only Black person on team. And I ended it with how in my
30+ years in Corp America a significant pay decrease taken in such a manner usually means company is inviting one to leave. So, I wrote, I’ll finish the year and accept the invitation. I worth more so, thanks but no thanks. Now, a word: I’m at an age and career status that I can
& will walk away because I can. I won’t do a big fight or stay & be angry. I’ll just walk away after quietly packing my 3 coffee cups and 2 water bottles. I couldn’t do it if I were a young parent w/two many bills, etc. So I hit “send” and decided I would not work until I heard
From bosses. He called 20 minutes later & said “please don’t leave. Give me time to see what company can do. I escalated to VP, he said, & they are “running the numbers.” And, “I didn’t know you got a 20% reduction. That made me madder. By a lot. So much wrong w/all that. But, ok
I said. Nothing happened all day & then boss called as soon as I got home & said “they ran the numbers & changed your salary so now you are getting an increase instead.” I replied “thank you.” & we hung up. Teenlet was next to me (I was making tacos as her majesty requested lol)
And she asked/said: that’s good, right? You’re going to stay now?” I told her I’d take the money & leave next year as soon as I find a job. Because none of that had to happen, it was poorly handled/mismanaged, & my professional feelings were hurt. There was no apology & no
Admittance of error or even oversight. And this is my introduction to new management team. They *may turn out to be wonderful. & I’ll have a month or more depending on how long it takes to find work, to learn abt then. It’s possible I’ll change my mind. But for now I’m done.
The callousness anytime, but especially during a pandemic & right before Christmas, & w/ two levels of mistreatment- 1) top performer who is penalized before “running the numbers” 2) race indifference at best, blatant racism at worst. Teenlet said: You always remain calm, huh?”
Lol. Only on the outside. On the inside I went East Oakland on them all. Lol But I says to her - never let a company mistreat you and act like they don’t know what they did. They do know. They always do. So I got a raise but I can’t even celebrate it because, corporate assholes.
