I only knew them from a promo when I was a critic, & they were nice but not revelatory—like how you can enjoy a good Thai restaurant without needing to go back.

Stumbled onto a new album through the @bandcamp #krautrock tag
Honestly, I was probably going to turn it off after a bit—they're not krautrock; weren't what I wanted. But the audio engineer who shares our warehouse space got super excited: "Oh my god, is that Secret Machines? I recognize his voice! You're into them? That's so cool!"
Me:
It's a really well-made album; reminds me of M83. I'm really into male/female harmonies right now, so that was nice. It's a bit more melancholic and mid-tempo than most of what I listen to. But it had some nice highlights and feels timely for 2020.
In an alternate universe, I could see them becoming a favorite band or a huge crossover hit—they're clearly a big, meaningful band for other people. It was just a little reminder of how much a role chance plays in what becomes aesthetically meaningful to us.
