This is the first time I think I’ve ever seen the issue of shame being identified as a central motivator for a perpetrator’s homicidal behaviour. Identifying & working with shame is absolutely crucial imho re risk assessment & management but rarely is considered
Also the issue of alcoholism & morbid jealousy. Very high risk & no mention of any agency involved with this family. Morbid jealousy is often delusional & there is a dearth of research on this within the forensic arena.
Part of the notion of masculinity/ being a “real” man places huge store on sexual prowess & that sex is about conquest as opposed to mutual respect, intimacy etc. As a consequence of alcohol & in particular alcoholism, sexual dysfunction occurs.
Erectile dysfunction occurs & this impacts on important issues such as self-image which gives rise to doubts about being’a real man’. In turn this gives rise to increased alcohol consumption & an increasing sense of shame. Shame underpins patriarchal notions of masculinity
This gives rise to feelings of ‘if I’m not the man I should be then I am lesser than other men’. In turn the fear arises that she will leave me for another “real/proper man” because I am sexually dysfunctional etc
This continues as he becomes increasingly hypervigilant. Risk increases & this develops to the point where the perpetrator chooses to end the life of another because to do so is perceived as the only way they can restore their self identity as a man.
James Gilligan has written extensively on the issue of shame & death of the self & how violence to others prevents death of the self & restores self-image. It’s v difficult to articulate in detail all the issues via tweets! To be clear I am setting out the processes that occur
In men who perpetuate such murders. In no way is this to excuse, exonerate or minimise their actions/behaviour. They are 💯% responsible fir their behaviour. I also believe that issues such as shame are rarely understood let alone dealt with in most risk assessments, risk
Management plans, interventions & perpetrator programmes. Imho if you don’t identify these issues then any intervention or risk assessment will be negligible in its effect & may actually increase risk #maleviolence
