I have some loud thoughts on CC➡️academia. A 🧵.. https://twitter.com/tomkimmerer/status/1339634819265929216
I did 2 years at a CC prior to attending a 4yr. Coming from a rural area with little-to-no money for college...this was the ONLY path for me. And I have never once regretted it. My profs there were amazing, and the low student:prof ratios made for spectacular classes and labs.
Now ~7.5 years later, and I’m an instructor at a PUI. One of my main goals is to model for students there can be SO many paths to success.
Sometimes that involves a CC, a gap year, some time off, etc. and just because your path is different does NOT make you a bad academic/failure/imposter/or lesser than your peers.
I still chat with some of my CC profs today, eh @pushthatrock? (Even tho his class, pre-cal and cal, was very difficult for me😂). And it’s been absolutely inspiring watching my fellow CC graduates take the world by storm since we’ve all gone our separate ways.
Point being: if you’re a student reading this, please know there are many of us who, like you, might’ve ended up on a nontraditional path. It can feel isolating sometimes (especially during grad school at an R1 when your peers seem to instinctively know how to “academic” already
Your differences make you stronger, and we need people like you in academia!! Seek mentors who see your differences as a strength and value your perspective!
