Brave Fencer Mushashi

Quick History

Brave Fencer Musashi is one of my favorite games from the late 90’s and was one of the first games I played before I knew who Square was at the time (besides playing Mario RPG as my first Square RPG)...1
I tried to find everything I can about the game from old interviews and developer notes to piece together the development history of the game and how it came to be...2
I like to think of Musashi as a part of the experimental period of Square where they wanted to try other games besides Final Fantasy for example: Xenogears, Einhander, Threads of Fate and more to name a few...3
How it Started the Idea

Sakuguchi (Father of Final Fantasy) has said the idea came to him and Square’s B Team in February of 1997. The team wanted to make an action RPG and wanted to challenge themselves to make a 3D action game...4
Square was still used to 2D action RPG games ‘Mana Series, Act Raiser come to mind’ In interviews there were Ideas for a series of Musashi like games but only one sequel was made in 2005 (Musashi: Samurai Legend) and nothing after that...5
The Team

Games he helped produced: Front Mission (’95), Einhander (’97), Parasite Eve 2 (’99), and Final Fantasy Origins, Chronicles, and Anthology. He hasn’t produced a game since the early 2000’s...12
Writer: Koichi Ogawa

Story was written by Koichi Ogawa who was also a planner/designer on the Goemon games for Konami, on the SNES. It is interesting to see both the director and writer of Mushashi start from Konami and then switched to Square in the mid to late 90’s... 13
Latest credits are Designer on Kirby Mass Attack for the Nintendo DS (2011) and Chief Planner for Dragon Quest XI (2017). Was also a Dungeon Map Planner for Final Fantasy XI. (2002)....14
Artist: Koji Matsuko

Not is too much is known about the artist and only found one game he has worked on called “Messenger From Dark Knight” a pc visual novel. This is a great thread where one of the earliest designs for Princess Fillet in the game being reused for Musashi...15
Earlier inspiration for Princess Fillet design being reused for Musashi ...16
I enjoyed the character designs from Mushashi and Messenger due to the early 90’s aesthetic look similar to something like Tenchi Muyo or Slayer. The character designs are similar to the style of Final Fantasy Tactics (Akihiko Yoshida) with the “no nose” look...17
