Here's FRELIMO founder Eduardo Mondlane with his family in Dar es Salaam, May 1968.

Janet Robinson grew up in Indiana & met Mondlane in 1951, when he spoke at a church camp in Wisconsin. They married in 1956, while he did research at Harvard & she was a student at Boston U. 1/

Mondlane spoke in a great number of churches in the US during the 1950s. Here are some reports:
1. from Dec. 1951.
2. from 1953, while studying @oberlincollege.
3. from Feb. 1955, while doing a PhD @NorthwesternU.
4. from Ap. 1962, as an anthropology prof @SyracuseU.

By 1962 they were living in Dar es Salaam. Mondlane was recruiting an army to fight the Portuguese.

Both reports below are from June 1963. One concerns Mondlane's military plans; the other is about his niece, who came from Madison, Wisconsin to live with them in Dar.

Mondlane used his deep connections in the US & the UK to raise support for FRELIMO. Here he is in London, March 1968.

It is to be lamented at we have to fight for our independence [but] the involvement of many millions of people in the armed struggle...is uniting our people.'

Mondlane was assassinated--presumably by the Portuguese secret police--in Feb. 1969. He was buried at Kinondoni Cemetery in Dar es Salaam.

Here's the service on the first anniversary of his death. Samora Machel was there, along with Janet.

This is to me a very moving clip.

In Feb. 1979 Mondlane's remains were moved by the new govt to Mozambique. The remains of 5 other FRELIMO leaders--Josina Machel, Felipe Magaia & others--were also relocated.

Janet was to stay on in Maputo, where she worked to organise health care and provide education.
