Some comments on this op-ed. 1. The WTO is not “a person”. It is an international agreement that we and others made. The organization itself has only the tiniest powers. A new director-general will make little difference. https://twitter.com/sdonnan/status/1339744467088248832
2. The WTO has been highly respectful of domestic regulation. It is strictly false that “Domestic laws and programs that got in the way of ‘free trade’ were swatted aside like cobwebs.”
3.The Appellate Body is useful to help interpret and declare the rules, encouraging compliance. Problems with China arose because the rules did not fit China’s economy well, and Trump decided to flagrantly violate the rules instead of working within the system to change them.
4. Bringing back the Appellate Body would definitely help.
5.The WTO had nothing to do with Glass-Steagall reform.
