Apocalyptic literature is a genre that we see in Daniel 7-12 and also Revelations that is characterized by symbolism, numerology, catastrophic events, etc. (Revelations differs somewhat in that it is both from Jesus and depicts Jesus)
The purpose of apocalyptic literature was to send a few messages to the persecuted Christian community, often persecuted for the ways in which they posed a threat to the political systems of the day.
For the persecuted community, Revelations promises reward for the martyrs, judgment and punishment for the enemy, and encourages endurance. It communicates to them that in the end, God will win and God’s people will win. It offers hope to the persecuted people.
Additionally, the symbols present in Revelations are thought to depict the historical context of the time. The monsters are those who have persecuted and oppressed the people of Israel historically. In some ways, there is a looking back that takes place.
In reading Revelations, the historical context and intended message make all the difference. If anything, Revelations is meant to offer hope to a suffering and/or oppressed people.
You’re getting this thread because I had to learn it for my New Testament exam, and it may be helpful for you as well. Lol
*Also, insert beasts for monsters. If you want to see it broken down verse by verse get a commentary or study Bible.
