I think some of my reporter colleagues are going to wholeheartedly disagree with me, but I need to express something for team and league PR staffs moving forward that I hope they'll heed: Remote press conferences were good for my work and I hope they continue in the future.
I covered 6 soccer teams on a regular (basically daily) basis this year, with another 1-2 in the wings, across three leagues. It is physically impossible to go to training and to games for all of those teams, obviously.
Even if/when free movement is allowed again, going to cover something for one team means coverage of other teams will not be possible if you're traveling to/from and doing intense coverage of whatever team(s) are physically present.
On top of this, I'm a working mom and childcare is paramount. I had hoped I might get to more games and a few trainings in 2020, but logistically it's not simple. I have to line up childcare well in advance, and in all, an LA gameday is usually an 8-hour commitment altogether
So, I realize I am unusual in some respects, but remote press conferences 1. Allow me to participate at all; 2. Allow me to participate while also being able to take care of my kid
I understand that local reporters who get to trainings and putter around locker rooms after games can get material that otherwise may not be possible. That's great! I don't begrudge that at all. What I'm asking for is an opportunity to still be able to ask some questions.
What I hope is that in the future, teams will allow a hybrid, where they can accommodate physically present reporters and those working remotely, and on a consistent basis. You'll get more coverage and more informed reporters.
