Some positive news for 2020: not only are we replacing old roads named after white supremacists, but we're naming *new* ones not after some variant of shrubbery.

The roads for the Galaxie Farm Subdivision:
Mae Jemison Lane
Mary Jackson Drive
Marie Curie Court
Vera Rubin Road 1/9
Some pictures, bios, and quotes ( https://gallifreybuilds.com/galaxie-farm ): 2/9
I had originally hoped at least part of Galaxie would be cottage clusters. But BOS denied that ...so its now a conventional subdivision, but at least $500k+ homes will be built on roads named after female scientists. It was the most I could get (this time).

RIP cottages. 3/9
Bc of how conventional the subdivision became, we made the tough decision to sell, and use the money to push for other, more unconventional, and more equitably designed projects.

The transaction closed this week.
A requirement of the sale was that they keep my road names... 4/9
So let's talk about Mae Jemison Lane.

Dr. Jemison was the first Black woman to travel to space. Born in Alabama, raised in Chicago, undergrad degree from Stanford, medical degree from Cornell. Before NASA, she worked as a Peace Corps doctor in Liberia and Sierra Leone. 5/9
Mary Jackson Drive.

Mrs. Jackson was the first Black woman engineer at NASA, and was responsible for safely calculating departure to/from space (as seen in the movie Hidden Figures). My fav quote: “I plan on being an engineer at NASA…I have no choice but to be the first.” 6/9
Marie Curie Court.

Mrs. Curie was a physicist and chemist who conducted pioneering research on radioactivity - the first woman to win a Nobel Prize, the first person + only woman to win the Nobel Prize twice, and the only person to win the Nobel Prize in 2 scientific fields. 7/9
Vera Rubin Road.

Dr. Rubin was an astronomer who pioneered work on galaxy rotation rates, leading to the discovery of dark matter. Initially met w skepticism, her work was confirmed over later decades. Legacy described by the NYT as "ushering in a Copernican-scale change." 8/9
I know all this may be dumb + symbolic, but I can't tell you how hard I fought for it.

I promise we will get more next time. Also, one of the few Black landowners originally owned this land, and decided to give this little weirdo a shot. It will not be for nothing. 9/9
