[CW: porn, abuse, sw]
I'm glad PornHub is facing increasing scrutiny but it is angering that it took capital pressure (of credit card companies) to force their hand rather than PornHub listening to those being harmed. https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2020/12/visa-mastercard-investigate-pornhub-amid-allegations-of-child-exploitation/

The credit card part has been playing out the last couple of weeks but the complaints to PornHub by people being harmed by PornHub's inaction, for much longer: https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2020/12/visa-and-mastercard-ban-pornhub-over-abusive-videos/
It is only the money of credit card companies that finally forced PornHub to action: https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2020/12/pornhub-purges-all-unverified-user-uploads-in-wake-of-abuse-allegations/
It is important for everyone to think about the porn we consume. Even just considering consensual porn, sex work is work. Where does it come from, who gets to make the rules, who profits off of it? You may not have stopped to think about it but please do! https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2020/12/mindgeek-the-secretive-owner-of-pornhub-and-redtube/
Especially, for those in tech. Our industry held so much promise but instead has been co-opted by patriarchy & capitalism magnifying the damage to those most marginalised in our society. This is not just in porn but in some ways exemplified by it.
As Lust says in the MindGeek article:
“We need to know who is controlling the type of sex that we are being fed.”
Very true. I think we could even widen it to:
“We need to know who is controlling the type of [content] are being fed.”
These dynamics also play out on FB & IG.

Our views on nudity and sex are driven by Western norms, patriarchal framing, and capitalistic control. Us in tech have the power to fight that system or be a part of it. Either though how we help educate each other about the ethics or though the tools we help create.
