Here's how I differentiate between a true liberal and a true conservative:

Both are liberals in the classical sense, believing that individual liberty is paramount.

The liberal seeks to advance liberty by freeing the individual of the hardships and injustices that prevent one from reaching their potential. Government is a means to that end.

The conservative seeks to advance liberty largely by freeing the individual of the restraints placed on them by government. Government is a barrier.

3/5
Both seek the same end: flourishing of the human spirit under liberty.

The disagreement is on the mechanisms that can be used to realize that end.

Only in the warped political environment of the 21st century is there a binary distinction between liberal and conservative.

The dichotomy is a false one.
