And the unfortunate truth of the Rudy Gobert supermax thing is that the Jazz are in between a rock and a hard place. Here are the three doors:
Door No. 1: You sign Rudy Gobert to a big contract. Mitchell/Gobert take up 55-65% of the cap themselves. You lack cap room needed to make any FA acquisitions. You are built around two excellent but not elite stars.

You are: the Portland Trail Blazers!
Door No. 2: You let Rudy Gobert go. You are have some nice role players around an All-Star scoring guard, but with limited future assets. You can acquire a second star one day, but given the lack of assets/big market, it'll probably be an aging one.

You are: the Phoenix Suns!
Door No. 3: You trade Rudy Gobert. Because he's expiring, a center, and an unrestricted free agent, you get limited return: better than the Andre Drummond and Clint Capela deals, but not much.

You are: somewhat akin to but slightly better than the Indiana Pacers post-PG trade!
Given the options, I probably opt for Door No. 1: long-term second-tier status with the outside shot at a Pistons / Heat(Wade-Shaq edition) / Raptors / Mavericks title where everything goes right for you, highly dependent on Mitchell improving to be top-10/top-5.
