The Democrats have a bold and exciting agenda ranging from making it easier to vote to expanding healthcare coverage. None of these things will see the light of day with Mitch McConnell as the leader of the Senate.

What destroys most democracies isn’t hostile coups orchestrated by authoritarians or even the breaking of laws of the country. Democracies begin to crumble when the party in power starts to destroy the norms, the unwritten rules that the parties abide by.

Mitch McConnell has repeatedly broken the norms and will continue to do so if he maintains power in the Senate, further eroding our fragile democracy.

If we do not win the Georgia Senate seats then McConnell will, as the majority leader, employ the same obstruct and delay tactics that he successfully used during the Obama administration. In fact, he sees this as a strategy to help win elections.

Most Americans don’t pay attention to the details of what’s happening. All they know is if the government is getting stuff done or not. McConnell knows that if he obstructs and delays throughout the Biden presidency it could play in his favor in 2022 and 2024.

People will be frustrated that things aren’t getting done under a Biden presidency and may vote for Republicans to fix it. It doesn’t matter that Mitch McConnell will be solely responsible for any impasses. Most voters don’t pay enough attention to know this.

By electing Jon Ossoff and Rev Warnock to the Senate the Democrats will remove McConnell as the majority leader. We will then have control of the House, Senate and presidency and can finally pass legislation that has been blocked by McConnell for years.

With control of the House, Senate and presidency Democrats can get government working again and pass legislation that helps everyday Americans. In particular, legislation can be passed that makes voting easier for Americans.

By showing that government works and by making voting easier the Democratic Party will have a very good chance of making gains in 2022 and winning a 2nd term for Biden in 2024.

However, with McConnell controlling the Senate very little could get done, and Democrats could suffer losses in the upcoming elections because of voter frustrations over our ineffectual federal government.
