6 things I learnt as a brown girl moving out of home at 23:
(Let’s normalise brown girls & boys being allowed to live on their own)
1. You learn how to take care of your finances. You learn how to budget and know where you money is going. You set up automatic payments for your bills on time. You learn how to be smart with money and invest it. You don’t buy lunch everyday because “there’s food at home”.
2. You learn how to cook food you like, instead of learning how to cook food because “it’s a curry you should know for your future mother in law”. You learn how to eat food that is good for you that you can also enjoy. There is no pressure.
3. You learn to enjoy spending time with yourself and get comfortable in your own company and in your own silence. It’s an adjustment from being a loud busy punjabi household.
4. More so if you move to a new city) You learn how to put yourself out there and form new friends, whether that be flat mates, work colleagues, clubs or through hobbies.
5. You learn how to form healthier relationships with your family because when you do see each other it’s quality time spent. You learn to appreciate everyone is human and you realise how much your family did for you in their own ways. You begin healing the past.
6. Most importantly, you realise you can do it on your own two feet. You can be a responsible adult who doesn’t need to depend on anyone, you know how to just get things done even when the going gets tough, and that lays a very comforting foundation for the rest of your life.
