i always see people complaining about how white favoritism plays a role in a fandom’s love of characters (very valid), but we hardly talk about how white favoritism plays a role in how characters are created in the first place, which impacts how a fandom receives them
no matter how hard a white creator tries to be inclusive, they will inevitably add more depth/complexity to the white characters in their story. fandom, no matter the makeup of it, will then naturally gravitate towards the more well written characters, who almost always are white
so when we criticize how fandom receives characters of colors, i think we need to also think about the amount of investment the creators have in those characters of color to make them as equally dynamic and interesting as their white counterparts
basically, this issue of fan favorites and character stan culture is bigger and more complex than fandom! instead of pointing fingers at one another and assuaging blame, might i suggest you point at the creators and the system and hold them accountable
this applied to star wars with the kylo ren/ben solo and rey vs. finn, poe, and rose discourse. and according to my guesses, this will apply to the shadow and bone fandom with the darkling, kaz brekker, and literally everyone else lol
