Breaking: GPs are now able to use vaccine doses that were being wasted. Vials of the Pfizer jab was expected to include 5 doses- it turns out you can squeeze out 6. In an NHS webinar doctors were told that they could use the 6th dose “at their discretion” https://www.telegraph.co.uk/global-health/science-and-disease/gps-told-can-use-extra-covid-vaccine-dose-vials-discretion-prevent/
Story with the brilliant @jriggers for @TelGlobalHealth. This development follows an FDA decision in the US allowing clinicians to use six doses. But there are some concerns among pharmacists that inaccuracies in syringes could make it hard to consistently draw out 6 doses
In a worst case scenario, if every six doses are used in every vial, then there is a possibility that in three weeks we might not have enough doses to give people secondary vaccines. But in a best case scenario we stop wasting 1 in 6 doses, so more people can be vaccinated soon
And all this comes amid huge logistical concerns - some doctors told The Telegraph that they fear that as many as one in 10 doses could be wasted if the system is not improved.
