I've seen a lot of people say Rean and Lloyd are just goody two-shoes and Kuro-dude is already much more interesting because he isn't exactly like the previous two protagonist, but I really don't like that attitude
Yes, Lloyd is a goody two-shoes. He's an optimist and he always wants to help everyone he meets. He also has dreams of restoring the CPD's reputation and being as great as his brother, but his prime motivator is that he's genuinely a nice guy. So yes, Lloyd is a goody two-shoes.
But Rean on the hand is not like that at all. Rean is not and optimist and he has no dreams. In fact, Rean is completely aimless in life and has really low self esteem (this all can already be seen in Cold Steel1).
Rean isn't helping people out because he's a kind person who wants everyone to be happy, he helps people because he doesn't value himself at all. By spending all his free time helping out people he can feel he's contributing to society and his life can actually have some worth.
He simply doesn't know what else to do with this life. He has no dreams, he has no personal goals. If someone asks him to do a mundane task he will do that because he has nothing else he could do, and because his low self esteem says he has no value if he doesn't.
And I think the difference between Lloyd's and Rean's character is best shown in the events after Cold Steel 2. Rean simply accepts everything that happens, he does everything he's told to do because it's the only thing he thinks he can do, and he doesn't know what else to do.
Lloyd on the other hand does everything he can to fight the system, he never gives up. If Lloyd had been in Rean's situation, even if he's the biggest goody two-shoes, he would never accept what he's told to do because he would not see that as justice.
So yes, the end result is that both characters are people who help everyone in need, but their reasons for doing so are completely different. Dismissing them both as the same goody two-shoes archetype is incredibly disingenuous, especially to Rean's character.
I don't think Rean is a perfectly written character by any means though (I also like Lloyd much more than him) and I am very excited to see what Kuro-dude brings to the table, but a lot of people seem to completely dismiss Rean just based on what he seems like on the surface.
