With the Hendon Hooker news, Virginia Tech signed five high school QBs between 2015-2020 and just one — Knox Kadum, who’s never thrown a college pass — remains on the roster.
I asked Whit Babcock on Tues about the sheer volume of transfers & the @RossDellenger story from 2019 on players TRYING to lose… He said transfers were inevitable these days… but the diff at VT (IMO) is the number of STARTERS who want to leave. Usually it’s about playing time.
Now, was Hooker part of the plans moving forward? Playing time may well have been part of his rationale. But as I mentioned Tuesday… it’s like VT is trying to rebuild an offensive foundation EVERY year and will again next year w/o Hooker, Herbert & possibly others.
Hooker was first VT QB since Brewer to lead team in pass attempts 2 years in a row. Haven’t had same leading rusher 2 years in a row since 2008. Haven’t had same leading receiver since 2016.
Obviously in college football, where the best players are only there 3 years, you’re going to always be dealing with turnover, but the consistency of the turnover — particularly in cases where it’s not the NFL as the cause — is pretty staggering here.
