It's UXM #123-124, featuing the X-Men's first run in with the Pinball Wizard, the mad assassin Arcade!
I had completely forgotten before rereading these issues that Arcade is genuinely terrifying- perhaps moreso than any villain the X-Men have faced so far in their adventures.

Arcade isn't anything spectacular, especially compared to foes the team has already faced. He can't manipulate metal or a space emperor or even a vampiric pterodactyl man.
He's appears comedic, but that's half his horror! He's fully insane. He kills simply for the joy of it.

Arcade's 1st appearance was Marvel Team-Up #65 in which Spider-Man & Capt. Britain going up against his amusement park of horrors, so it makes sense that we get a guest appearance by Peter Parker!
Also Pete, there's basically nothing to do in the village when broke. Quit lyin'.

COLLEEN. SCOTT IS BRINGING UP JEAN AGAIN. WHY HAVEN'T YOU OFFERED YOUR CONDOLENCES TO MISTY RE: HER DEAD ROOMMATE? SHE WOULD SAY "JEAN ISN'T DEAD", THUS ELIMINATING 90% OF THE COMM. ISSUES IN THIS BOOK.
Also love Peter casually wondering if Misty & Danny are still fucking lol

1. I (am terrified of) love Arcade's commitment to his brand and the madness of both disguising your murder machine & putting your name on it
2. @uncannyxcerpts it's time! GNNRRR-SFLANNG!
3. Love the random appearance by the Sanctum Sanctorum. As they say, when in Greenwich...

I (am again terrified) by Arcade's commitment to the brand of absolutely ridiculous murder machines.
Would also love to meet the engineers who helped him build his "well, you see, it's a pinball machine, like for fun, but it also controls a giant murder pinball machine" toy.

I want to believe that I am evolved beyond the point of finding this funny... but here we are... laughing at this absolute queer nonsense.

Hey, it's the Monty Hall problem, but for murder!
(The Monty Hall problem is probability problem named after the host of Let's Make a Deal! It's way more complicated than you think! RE: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monty_Hall_problem)

This panel probably feels awfully different now than it did in July '79! It really captures @CerebroCast's gripes with the sliding time scale.
I'm stuck on the idea that the brainwasher isn't just speaking to Piotr's fear, but also the real fears of Cold War American readers.

Arcade is fucking terrifying. He's abusive, insane, and positively delighted by his inhumanity. These issues really feel like a turning point in CC's run for me and his willingness to get darker than his contemporaries. It's this, Proteus, and Dark Phoenix next... so yeah, dark.
Okay... so he's drawn... weirdly hunky here... but again, ARCADE IS FUCKING TERRIFYING.
If 20% of this thread being committed to this fact hasn't changed your mind, I'm not sure this INSANE backstory will, but goddamn I am unnerved by this man.

(Okay last one I swear)... ARCADE
IS
FUCKING
TERRIFYING!!!
Also I totally fancast Bill Skarsgård, perhaps famous for his recent turn at the titular clown from nightmare-fuel movie It, for the role of Arcade in the MCU Disney+ X-Men series, that I am trying to manifest.

Alright, enough about Arcade (BEING FUCKING TERRIFYING).
Does anyone know if there are any panels of Scott doing this, but while playing pool? Perhaps in a dive bar in Canada with Logan, that they've run away to for... reasons? No?
Someone get JDW on the line, I have an idea.

Just so that we can all come down from our Arcade-induced panic, here's some touching panels of Ro' breaking through Piotr's brainwashing with the powers of love and found family.
The love between them is one of the best things & I wish we were treated to it more in modern runs.

That's a wrap! I'll be back tomorrow for UXM #125 and our 1st annual of the Claremont era- UXM Annual #3! Saturday we'll take a thread or two to read through the Proteus saga, and on Sunday we'll dive back into a Classic backstory, all to get us ready for...
DARK PHOENIX WEEK!
