If it was just about knowing someone, I assure you I’d be a full time creator for $$.
Yesterday, I approached someone in production/finance who I’d done a lot of freelance work for in the past and who talked supportive talk, and aske them to check out my audio series and lmk their thoughts and where might be a good podcast network to pitch the rest of season 1.
Their answer: it won’t work anywhere.
Yes. It was that terse and yes, they responded MUCH too fast to have even listened to the show (within 5 minutes of my sending the email).

That response made me feel terrible. Not because of the rejection - I’ve handled way worse than that - but because I’d thought this person was on my side. I had a pity party. “It turns out they’re only on my side when I’m doing work for them. No reciprocity.

Then I realized: They don’t have an obligation to listen to my show. Their shows aren’t even REMOTELY similar to my content. It wasn’t foolish on my part to approach them (use every connection you have, etc.), but it was foolish on my part to expect unconditional support
So I’m not burning a bridge over this. They showed me they’re focused on 1 thing: their business. And that’s their prerogative (and that’s how you have to be to a degree). When/if I have a thing that’s right for that producer, I’ll circle back to them. In the meantime...
I need to find people who love the type of things I make, who read my pitch for a raunchy, feminist romcom and click on the link to listen/watch before they even think of doing anything else. So that’s my focus for 2021: to find my fans (in the industry and out).
And bc I worked on films as an exec that are VERY different from those I make/want to make - I’m kind of starting at the bottom. And that’s okay. Because I’m also starting with clearer vision and more focus than before.
