Accessibility can also be linked to poor health literacy -- here are some tips for healthcare peeps to improve health literacy among their patients
Ask patients open-ended questions to assess their understanding. Ask them to repeat the info, in their own words, what you have said to them. This is called the teach/show back communication method.
Use simple language - "belly" instead of "abdomen", "harmful" instead of "adverse", etc.
Use graphics! Draw images (even if you draw stick people in your illustrations)!
Bring them to confirm the instructions for the medication you ask them to take... do they understand it correctly?
Avoid making assumptions about the depth of knowledge your patient (or your audience) has on any given topic. Give them a brief overview!
