There's a new IG page that gives me pause for concern ⚠️. Jamaica's tourism sector is promoting a dated image of JA as a passive romping space for the West to enjoy. I don't know that it's intentional, but it nuh right. Sun, sea, sex, & sensi aren't all Jamdown has to offer. 1/6
In a sea-change year like 2020, where representation matters more than ever, why are Jamaica or its vendors marketing themselves (with govt support) as only a kind of play land for visitors? Why aren't we advocating for and promoting the meaningful elements of our life here? 2/6
Don't we control our own international narrative? If so, why not promote, for ex, literary tourism? Reading is 🆙 in 2020. So why not push literary tours to places like rural St Mary where 2020 Hurston/Wright Legacy prz winner Curdella Forbes set A Tall History of Sugar? 3/6
Not just reading though, climate change info + knowledge are also 🆙 in 2020. So as Cockpit Country's bauxite fate is decided, we should be promoting the preservation of our natural resources, not sexing them off as beach stays and jerk chicken meals. 4/6
"A Yah Suh Nice" fi true, but if we fail to protect ourselves from internal stagnation or external exploitation, no amount of sex, rum, or ganja will be able to build back our land, our water supplies, our coral reefs, or our people. 5/6
It's totally regressive to put the *future* of Jamaica's economy on any "hip strip" or "Main Street." We're 14 parishes of culinary, musical, literary, spiritual, etc talent. If we are going to open up Jamaica anew, we desperately need to expand how AND where we place value. 6/6
