2020 has been quite a year to lead an organization, esp. in an interim capacity. But it has been a huge privilege to lead @OxfamCanada. I've loved it. I thought I’d share some reflections on what made it possible & what I have learned in this extraordinary year. 1/12
In January 2021, we will welcome back the brilliant @LaurenRavon as @OxfamCanada’s Executive Director. Follow her! Collaborate with her! Support her! She’s ace! 2/12
The staff @OxfamCanada are an incredibly dedicated & expert group. I am proud that in this difficult year, we have taken a compassionate and feminist approach to our work together, while never losing sight of our focus on promoting women’s rights around the world! 3/12
It is an honour to work with the whole @Oxfam team in our fight against inequality. We are making big changes to be a more nimble & humble INGO that does more to support social justice struggles around the world. Change is hard but I’m proud of the direction we’re heading 4/12
Solid governance of an organization like ours is critical – to inspire public trust & provide important oversight & direction. A shout out to the wonderful @OxfamCanada Board of Directors & a special thank you to @RicAcuna who is the best board chair anyone could hope for! 5/12
One of the things I ♥️ most about my work with @OxfamCanada is the amazing allies, partners and coalitions we work with. To all of you – I hope you know who you are – THANK YOU! I truly believe that it is only by working together that we can drive the change we want to see. 6/12.
On a personal note, I’ve thought a lot about what good feminist leadership means. It’s not easy. And it’s never perfect. It feels a bit self indulgent to share these reflections. But I value this space as a place to reflect and learn, so hope that someone finds these useful. 7/12
Leadership reflection #1: I have a huge amount of learning and unlearning to do on racism and reconciliation. As a white, privileged feminist, I am committed to being a better ally. Thank you to those I am learning from. I hope I don’t disappoint. 8/12
Leadership reflection #2: Balancing internal and external priorities when leading an organization is tough. Both require attention if you want your organization to succeed. It feels near impossible to nail this. Perhaps it gets easier with experience. 9/12
Leadership reflection #3: Sometimes reflection is important. Sometimes you just need to make. a. call. It is possible to be a decisive AND caring leader. Take responsibility for the bad decisions. Let others take responsibility for the good ones. 10/12
Leadership reflection #4: Taking the plunge to lead can be intimidating as a maman with two young kids, but you can do it! And you can do it well! Merci beaucoup à mon conjoint pour tout son travail à la maison. Superstar.🌟 11/12
As we move into the holidays, I wish everyone rest, recuperation & if you can manage it, good cheer! To those who are sick or struggling, I hope you get the care & support you need. Looking forward to returning in 2021 with a renewed commitment to equality & justice! 12/12
