🔊SOUND ON. Take two minutes to watch this.

@SandraLeeFewer on the SF school district’s lack of a plan for reopening schools.

“You talk to some of these children. You go to these community learning hubs. It will break your heart. It is racist and this is a disservice.”
Here’s the context:

SF’s Board of Supervisors met on Tuesday to discuss a straightforward resolution.

One urging the school district to develop a “comprehensive plan for the safe return to in-person learning in accordance with public health guidelines.”

Sounds simple, right?
Not so fast.

Because even though the resolution is non-binding, some BOS members, feeling pressure from the union, felt it wasn’t ready.

Which meant pushing the vote back.

Delays upon delays.

Meanwhile, here are the facts:

Schools in SF are still not open.

It has been nine months since the city’s public school children last saw the inside of a classroom.

Kids are struggling. Families are struggling. Black and brown students are disproportionally impacted.
The school district’s current plan for return has just a few thousand kids back to schools by March 22, 2021.

No plan yet for middle schoolers. No plan yet for high schoolers.
Remember, this resolution is literally the least the city can do.

And on Tuesday, they couldn’t even agree on this non-binding statement of purpose.

The BOS will be holding a Special Meeting on Dec. 22 at 2 p.m. to further discuss the resolution.
Supervisors Fewer, Stefani, Peskin, Yee, Mandelman, Ronen and Safai were ready to pass this on Tuesday.

The others were not ready yet.
